IPC 4D Student Expectation: assess the relationship between force, mass and acceleration, noting the relationship is independent of the nature of the force using equipment such as dynamic cars, moving toys, vehicles and falling objects. Pasadena ISD – IPC Physics

2 Nature of the Force (N) Force is a push or pull.
Force is measured in newtons (N) 1 N = 1 kg•m/s2 The cause of the force DOES NOT affect the relationship between force, mass, and acceleration.

3 Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion

4 Newton’s 2nd Law Force = Mass x Acceleration
The net force has a direct relationship to mass and acceleration. Acceleration is produced when a force acts on a mass. Acceleration = gravity Gravity = 9.8 m/s2

5 Direct Relationship Force, Mass and Acceleration
The magnitude of the force and the mass of an object determines the acceleration of the object. Directly proportional: __ mass on an object __ force needed to accelerate the object

6 Free Falling Objects Force = Mass x Acceleration
Objects with different masses will accelerate to the Earth at the same rate. Force = 98 N Force = 9.8 N Mass = 10 kg Mass = 1 kg 9.8 N 1 kg 98 N 10 kg Acceleration = Gravity = 9.8 m/s2

7 Newton’s 3rd Law Action - Reaction
girl pushes the wall; wall pushes the girl. earth pulls moon; moon pulls earth.

8 Action - Reaction Pairs

9 For every action there’s an equal and opposite reaction
Action is on two different objects; Ball hits bat. Bat hits ball.

10 The Reaction is equal but in opposite directions.
Hot gases pushes down on the ground. Ground pushes hot gases back up.
