1 Meet the Writer – Pages 278-279 TEXT FEATURES
Examine the pages and note any TEXT FEATURES you think help convey the information. Title Date Illustrations/Photographs Captions Subheadings Timeline Fonts – Bold, Italicized, Color…

2 Meet the Writer – Pages 278-279
1. Place your full name and today’s date in the top right-hand side of the paper. (Be sure to use the blank margin area). Write the author’s name and years he lived on the first line of your paper. Using the entire lined portion of the front side of the paper, create FOUR equal size boxes. 4. Use the Sub-Headings in the text to label each box with one of the sub-headings. *Avoid the timeline* (Use each sub-heading only once). 5. Carefully read each section of the text and identify four important details to include in your organizer.

3 A Poe Time Line Read the events in the time line.
2. Select the FIVE events you believe would be most important in Poe’s life and MIGHT impact Poe’s writing during his career. 3. Write the list in PRIORITY order but be sure to include the date for each of your choices. They may not be in chronological order at this point. 4. How do you think Poe would “view” the world based on the significant events of his life. EXPLAIN why he would see things that way and DEFEND your idea (thesis) with text details.

4 Symbols and Meaning Create a SYMBOL to accurately represent Poe’s life and his view of the world based on what you have read about him. 2. Defend your SYMBOL by EXPLAINING its meaning and connecting it to the details that you thought were significant. 3. Your symbol may use other smaller images to help you convey your ideas. 4. Be CREATIVE, ACCURATE, and CLEAR. Remember to demonstrate your understanding of the major events in Poe’s life through your artwork and words.

5 Questioning and Research
Doing research involves knowing what questions to ask as well as where to find reliable information. Based on your understanding of Poe’s life and works, which questions do you think need to be answered before you can accurately decide what really happened to Poe during the final days of his life? What types of documents would you expect to see as part of the “proof” of your thesis? 4. How does “bias” play a role in any research project?

6 Connections Read and annotate a few of Poe’s poems.
Identify at least three examples where you can see Poe’s life in his poetry. 2. Defend your examples by EXPLAINING and CONNECTING the specific examples to the details in his life. You must make your ideas clear and easy to understand; I do not read minds. 4. Remember to demonstrate your understanding of the major events in Poe’s life through your artwork and words.
