Write out each sentence. Then, choose the correct word for each sentence and edit any mistakes in capitalization and punctuation (2 total errors per sentence).

3. Simple sentences
Definition: Contains one independent clause made up of a subject and a predicate In other words: one complete idea/sentence Formula: Simple sentence = Subject + Predicate

4. Simple sentences
Simple sentence = Subject + Predicate Examples: Joe waited for the afternoon train impatiently. Mary and Samantha explored the city.

5. Compound sentences
Definition: Adds together two or more independent clauses with a conjunction and a comma In other words: two complete sentences combined with a FANBOYS and a comma Formula: Sentence+ comma + FANBOY +sentence For And Nor But Or Yet So

6. Compound sentences
Sentence+ comma + FANBOY +sentence Examples: Italy is my favorite country, so I plan to return soon. He wanted to see the movie, but it was sold out. Common mistake: What’s wrong here? I wanted to go to the party, but was too sick to do so.

7. Complex sentences
Definition: contains an independent and at least one dependent clause
In other words: combines a complete sentence with a phrase that IS NOT a complete sentence
Formula: sentence + incomplete sentence phrase
Some dependent clause (incomplete sentence phrase) beginnings:
After, although, as, because, before, even if,
even though,  rather than, since, so that, though,
unless, until, when, where, whether, while, when

8. Complex sentences sentence + incomplete sentence phrase Examples:
Although I like to go camping, I haven’t had the time to go recently.
She believed in fairytales when she was younger.

9. Compound-complex sentences
Definition: contains two dependent clauses and at least one independent clause
In other words: a compound sentence combined with a complex sentence
Formula:
Sentence + comma + FANBOYS +sentence + incomplete sentence phrase

10. Compound-complex sentences
Sentence + comma + FANBOYS +sentence + incomplete sentence phrase
Examples:
Laura forgot her friend's birthday, so she sent her a card when she finally remembered.
The team captain jumped for joy, and the fans cheered because we won the state championship.
Advice: write a compound sentence, and then add a dependent clause/incomplete sentence phrase
