PLANTS Chapter 22-24
2
BIOLOGY– Plant Growth Experiment
Warm-Up: What do plants need to survive? Today: Introduction to Plant Growth Experiment Research
3
What do plants need to survive?
Sunlight – make food through photosynthesis Gas Exchange (CO2 and O2) Water and Minerals PHOTOSYNTHESIS 6 CO H2O → C6H12O6 + 6 O2 Carbon dioxide + Water + Light energy → Glucose + Oxygen
4
What factors influence plant growth?
Brainstorm
5
Plant Growth Experiment
Purpose: Describe the characteristics and growth of a specific species of plant. Design an experiment to test how an experimental variable will affect plant growth. Directions: Each Group will have 4 plants. Half of these are controls and the others will be the experimental. You will be responsible for taking care of your own plants.
6
Plant Growth Experiment
Conduct background research about plant growth. Develop a question about how a particular treatment will affect plant growth. Develop a hypothesis based on research. List the materials you will use for this experiment. Design an experiment to answer that question.

Background Research: French Dwarf Marigolds and Plant Growth
General Information Scientific name Common name Physical Description – what does it look like? Germination time Average height Planting instructions Water needs Nutrient needs Soil type Soil moisture Major uses of the plant Treatment Effects Plant growth Flowering Bushiness Leaf coloration
8
Today Conduct background research about plant growth.
Use the internet and seed packet to research general information about your plant Keep track of websites visited for works cited When finished with the general information section of the research organizer, write the first paragraph on background research. Save this document.
