2 Student Expectations…
Here’s what I expect you to do as a part of this class. When we all do these things we’ll have an awesome class! I will respond when my name is called. I will respond to polling prompts. I will ask and answer questions. I will complete class work, take notes, submit exit tickets. I will collaborate in groups if placed into breakout rooms. I will demonstrate respect for my classmates and teachers. Have students raise their hands to show that they agree w/ and understand the “Terms” Marking yourself “away” means you are not in class and will miss important parts of the lesson. EVERYONE needs a working mic. Call K12-care if it’s not working. Let’s get it fixed!

3 Standards and Objectives
PA Standard Objectives 8.4.7.A. Summarize the social, political, cultural, and economic contributions of individuals and groups in world history. Students will identify Charlemagne as king of the Franks in AD 800 and list examples of his achievements. Students will locate Charlemagne’s empire on a map and identify the countries that are in that area today.

6 The most famous King of the Franks, Charlemagne!
Also known as Charles the Great, Charlemagne ruled during the 8th century. His father was known as Pepin the Short and his mother as Big-foot Bertha. He was 6 foot 4 inches tall with a big bull neck, a handsome face, and a potbelly. He also had large feet just like his mom! Legend has it that our one-foot measure originated from the length of Charlemagne’s foot!

7 Charlemagne was…. A skilled hunter. A lover of music.
A lover of learning. A devout Christian. A powerful athlete. Someone who brought energy to everything he did.

8 Not just successful in war, but peace as well
Charlemagne expanded education and learning. He wanted schools across the realm. He set a palace school where the finest teachers taught future government officials. (All of this while he was unable to write himself!) He supported monasteries. He gave them funds and instructed them to take care of the great works in their libraries. Much of the classical literature we have today is here because of the preservation done in Charlemagne’s time.

11 A Crowning Glory Pope Leo III saw all of Charlemagne’s contributions to unite Europe under Christianity. On Christmas Day in 800 A.D. at a mass in Rome, the Pope crowned Charlemagne the first emperor of “the Holy Roman Empire.”

12 All good things come to an end!
Charlemagne passed away from old age at 70! Unfortunately, his empire did not last long after his death. His sons proved to not be their father’s equal. They divided his realm, fought threats from within the realm, and faced new invaders from the north…… THE VIKINGS!
