Make Learning Animated With Animoto
Marie Webb ITEC 7445 Dr. Moore April 1, 2016 Emerging Technology
2
What is Animoto? Animoto is an online website that allows for the simple creation of videos using pictures, videos, and music that have a powerful impact. Animoto is great for providing content through the system LMS allowing continued learning and support for students at home. Animoto allows teachers to present information in a way that students learn best.
3
What is Animoto (cont’d)
Watch this video to see how Animoto can be used for education.
4
The Technology Vision of Newton County
The Newton County School System envisions students, who through a rigorous and relevant education, will be able to think critically in order to produce, perform, create, and communicate their knowledge competitively to a hyper-connected, global audience.
5
How Does Animoto Align With The Vision?
Teachers are able to present students with more engaging and relevant material Students learn material in a world-view method Students can access the material anytime - anywhere
6
Objectives To increase student engagement through the integration of technology To provide the opportunity for remediation or extension lessons Fast and easy video creation for teachers to save time while making entertaining, but effective lessons
7
Benefits of Animoto Great for use in classrooms K-12
Makes flat presentations come alive Allows students more control of their learning by accessing the videos as needed Ease of use saves teachers time versus other more complicated programs Student accounts included
8
Benefits (cont’d) Can be shared, embedded, loaded to YouTube, or downloaded Free app for mobile devices Provided music library Easy transfer of pictures from social sites like Flickr, Facebook, Instagram, etc. FREE for educators
9
Software and Hardware Needs
Because the software is online, students need devices that allow them connectivity All schools have 4-5 classroom computers Most schools also have laptop and iPad carts Newton County Schools supports a BYOD policy
10
Support and Troubleshooting
Animoto offers online assistance for troubleshooting Questions not answered online can be submitted to an Animoto technician
11
Limitations of Technology
Users are responsible for making sure content meets copyright fair use Content will only be available to students at school unless they have the resources at home
12
Cost of Technology Animoto is available to educators for free
Teachers must apply for a 6 month subscription At the end of 6 months, teachers may reapply Regular price for Animoto is $8.00 a month paid annually for a personal account
13
Possible Uses of Technology
The following video is an example of alphabet projects that were differentiated, but collaborated into a common product
14
Possible uses of Technology (cont’d)
In the below video promoting specific learning goals, math becomes engaging when learning about function notation
15
Possible Uses of Technology (cont’d)
In the below video, student learning has been documented in photographs and incorporated into a video to share with students, parents, and the community
16
Effectiveness of Video Technology Research
"Video is useful to show practical and real life activities and that video can be used to capture hazardous and costly experiments for presentation and for repeated use." (Mishra, 2001) Video is “a successful medium because it links the audio and the visual together to provide a multisensory experience for the learner.” (Hampton, 2002 p. 85)
17
Implementation of Animoto
Technology Coaches lead teachers in an introduction and workshop during pre-planning using the school computer labs Technology Teacher Leaders offer a remediation class for those still needing assistance during the second week of school Teachers may request remediation from the TTL as needed throughout the year
18
Change Model Stage 1 – Effective introduction and training
Stage 2 – Support for creation by offering workshops Stage 3 – Institutionalize by requiring teachers to Implement the use of Animoto once a week Stage 4 – Administrators and Academic Coaches will monitor the implementation during regular walk throughs/observations by evidence of lesson plans
19
Reflection Through this project:
I gained a deeper understanding of the value of video technology to enhance lessons I learned that video technology offers the benefit of allowing self-guided learning when made available through an online source like an LMS or website It was apparent that video technology can be used to better engage learners
20
Reflection (cont'd) This project has inspired me to make better use of available video technologies to improve my teaching practices Look for opportunities to bring flat lessons to life Provide more online support and independent learning opportunities
