Subject: Math Grade Level: Second Date: April 1, Unit: Data Analysis Topic: Graphing Time: 30 minutes Goal: TLW organize a collection of data with 4 or more categories using pictographs. Objective: TLW use data to create a picture graph. TEKS: 2.10B Materials/Resources/Technology Needs: Pencils, colors, drawing paper, bags of assorted colored jellybeans _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Instructional Procedures: In a small group, the students and teacher will work together, to identify jelly bean colors (sight words) and create a pictograph. Focusing event: Counting skills, organizing the correct colored jellybean with the correct color on the graph; and sight word recognition. Understanding the components of a pictograph. Sorting the jellybeans by color. Compare several colors/data analysis. Teaching/Learning Procedures: Review the definition of a pictograph. Pass out the bags of jellybeans. Ask students to describe the jellybeans inside. Students should give descriptive words for the jelly beans - colorful, tasty, hard, etc. Sort the jelly beans by color, then count how many are in each group. Remind students to review the “key” for our graph in order to draw the correct amount of jellybeans on the pictograph. Complete the graph. Formative Check (ongoing or specific): Constantly checking and motivating throughout the process. Making sure they also recognize color names in order to complete the graph. Reteach (alternative used as needed): Reinforce through math workbook activities. Closure: Each group will come to the front of the class to present their findings. They will answer these questions: (1)How many total jellybeans did you receive? (2)What color did you have the most of? (3)What color had the least amount of jellybeans? (4)Are there any colors with the same amount of jellybeans? Assessment/Summative Evaluation: The teacher check for understanding by giving multiple problems to do independently from our math workbook. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Modification/Notes: Pre-prepared data tables. Use accommodations - number line for counting.
