8 CCA The Fairsian Experience
Good evening Parents. My name is Mr Francis Ng, HOD CCA and I will be bringing you through the presentation on CCA, The Fairsian Experience.

9 Character Commitment Achievement
In our school, we term CCA as Character, Commitment and Achievement. With developing the child’s character and leadership competency as our main focus, the school sets up support structures to ensure that all pupils learn and growth in their 4/5 years of education in Fairfield.

10 What CCAs offer… Platform for personal growth Engaging experience
Inward realisation, outward growth Opportunity to develop as leaders and CCA is a very good platform to support the molding of a child’s character and building up leadership qualities in various ways. It allows for personal growth by providing engaging and enriching experiences for the pupils through well-planned and developmental activities.

Fairfield CCA Journey My Brief to the Sec 1s on 1st Day of School Must I have a CCA ? How do I choose a CCA? Is there a grading system ? What are the components in the CCA grading system ? What can I do now ? and CCA is a very good platform to support the molding of a child’s character and building up leadership qualities in various ways. It allows for personal growth by providing engaging and enriching experiences for the pupils through well-planned and developmental activities.

12 The CCAs the school can offer is influenced by
Facilities Budget Teachers expertise National needs eg UGs School’s heritage CCA Days (Mon, Wed, Fri)

13 SPORTS TEAMS Badminton (Girls) Basketball ( Boys) Football (Boys only)
Volleyball (Boys & Girls) Squash (Boys) Netball (Girls) This is a list of the sports CCA that Fairfield offer. Each sport trains an average of about 3 times a week. Pupils are selected into the sports CCA based on their talent and skills as they will be training competitively to represent the school in the National Schools competition. Recreational players will find that they are at a disadvantage under the LEAPS grading as they will not be able to stand a chance in representing the school. So if your child has been selected and identified by our coaches. Congratulations! The sports CCA also looks into the other areas of holistic development, as explained earlier. E.g. pupils in the volleyball team and netball team have volunteered their services at the Queenstown GRC weekly Meet the People’s Session as well as block visits.

14 Performing Arts Groups
Symphonic Band Choir Drama -English Modern Dance Guitar Ensemble Our Performing Arts CCA have practises about 3 times a week too and like the sports team, entry into PA CCA is by selection only. And therefore, parents, if your child has been selected into a PA CCA, congratulations to you too.

15 Uniformed Groups Girls’ Brigade Boys’ Brigade Red Cross Youth (Mixed)
National Cadet Corp (Land)- Boys National Cadet Corp (Sea) -Mixed Uniform group CCAs are a very good platforms to build character and leadership. UGs instill a high level of discipline and resilience in its members through the various programmes organised by the teachers and HQ. I think for those of us who had the UG experience during our school days and especially for the males who have had the opportunity to serve in the National Service, we do know how the UGs bond and build in us, the spirit of self-discipline, team-unity and many other values. We want our pupils to also experience the rich and meaningful learning experiences. Please note that because of the close affiliation to the Singapore Navy and the cadets do go in naval camps and onboard navy ships for sailing expeditions with the navy, NCC Sea is open ONLY to boys and girls who are Singaporeans and are able to swim.

16 Clubs & Societies Core Media@Fairfield ( Photography, Videography)
Robotics Christian Fellowship Options for 2nd CCA_ PA/AVA Journalism Fairfield also offers non-core CCAs for pupils to take up as an additional CCA such as the clubs and societies listed. The clubs and societies conduct their CCA sessions 2-3 times a week. Parents, I want to strongly emphasize that the values of joining a club and society broaden and balanced the development of your child. While the pupils learn the specialized skills in the respective CCAs, for example, the Volleyball CCA members learn the technical skills in the sport; NCC Land cadets learn acquire basic military knowledge in affiliation to the SAF, taking up a CCA in the Clubs & Societies would provide the learning and development of other important lifeskills. Pupils who join a club or society find themselves learning useful soft skills such as debating skills, which build up their confidence in public speaking. Our Debating and Oratorical Society members have done extremely well by emerging as champions in the National Schools Debate Competition in In one of the dialogues with the Members of Parliament organised by the People’s Association, our pupils from the debate were specifically complimented by Mr Christopher, MP for Ulu Pandan, for their great competency and confidence in engaging the panel in the discussion on the issues of the post-1965 generation. Well, these debaters are also members of a Uniformed Group, Performing Art or Sport. Journalism helps in the improvement of the pupils’ writing skills; especially when the Journalism team is responsible for the school’s publication, such as the Fairsian Times and the school magazines. Our pupils in Journalism are also given opportunities to interact and pick up skills from the journalists from Channel News Asia. Our Art, Media, Library and Young Discoverers’ Club CCAs members have also been achieving at both National and International level Competitions. We are very pleased to share with you that our media team’s entry for the NEmationIII was awarded 2nd in the DigiCon6 Competition, a competition organised by the Tokyo Broadcasting System of Japan which showcases the very best of digital content created by professionals and amateurs in Asia. You may also have seen our pupils’ award-winning design at the postbox in Orchard Road, or the entries of book reviews put up in the National Libraries. These are soft skills that your child picks up from this category of CCAs.

19 Recognition System for Co-Curricular Attainment
Leaps 2.0

20 LEAPS 2.0 4 domains has levels of attainment: 1 - 5 Participation
Achievement Leadership Service The intent of LEAPS 2.0 is to affirm students for their efforts in holistic development. Through the school’s co-curricular programmes, students development in 4 domains – Participation, Achievement, Leadership and Service – will count towards their bonus points for admissions to post-secondary institutions. For the 4 domains included in bonus points computation, students may obtain levels of attainment that runs from level 1 to level 5 (as you can see in the document that you have). Brief elaboration on each domain: Participation - recognises your child’s membership in a school-based CCA Achievement - recognises your child’s achievements from representing the school or an external organisation approved by the school. Examples include representation and accomplishment at different platforms such as concerts and competitions. Leadership - recognises your child’s development as a leader Service - recognises your child’s contributions in community service

21 INTENT OF LEAPS 2.0 Motivate students towards holistic and balanced participation through the co-curricular programmes Facilitate the learning of values, skills and competencies for life Recognise diverse interests of students; developing students to be self-directed learners Recognise the “home-school-community” approach to holistic development of every child LEAPS supports students’ learning and development in the co-curricular programmes. Participation in the co-curricular programmes facilitates your child’s learning of values, skills and competencies for life. LEAPS motivates students to develop holistically by taking part in activities that will develop them in a balanced way across the different domains. We recognise that students may have diverse interests and some may pursue these interests outside school. On top of their school-based CCA, students’ representation and achievement with external organisations approved by the school will be recognised under LEAPS 2.0. In recognising students’ external achievements, community resources are harnessed to develop the child. In effect, LEAPS 2.0 better emphasises the importance of the home-school-community partnership in contributing to the development of our young.

22 Co-Curricular Experience
Basic Requirement for Level of Attainment in Domains Bonus Points for JC/Poly Admission Excellent 4,3,3,3 2 ( %) Good 4,1,1,1 3,2,1,1 2,2,2,1 1 ( %) Fair did not meet above criteria 0 (2018-3%) Refer to Pg of Student Diary for details. At the end of the graduating year, students’ co-curricular attainment will be recognised according to Excellent/Good/Fair. The level of attainment will be converted to a bonus point(s) which can be used for admission to Junior Colleges/ Polytechnics/ Institutes of Education (JC/Poly/ITE). Optional for School to mention: The use of CCA grade for admission to MI is being reviewed. Key Message LEAPS 2.0 uses only broad bands of co-curricular experience and is much blunted compared to previous LEAPS – there are only 3 possibilities. Though we have blunted the system, students’ attainment is expected to be comparable (based on 2012 national cohort data, about 60%, 25% and 15% for 2, 1 and 0 bonus points). Excellent (2 bonus points) attained a minimum Level 3 in all four domains with at least Level 4 in one domain. Good (1 bonus point) attained a minimum Level 1 in all four domains with any one of the following: At least Level 2 in three domains; At least Level 2 in one domain and at least Level 3 in another domain; or At least Level 4 in one domain. Fair (no bonus points)

23 What You Can Do To Support Your Child

24 How You Can Partner the School
Monitor your child’s participation. Check for letters and any notifications issued by CCA teachers. Refer to the CCA webpages for the CCA’s yearly programme Schedule tuition and enrichment activities on weekends/non-CCA days if possible.
