Professional mechanic
“The more I was discouraged by my friends, the more I wanted to prove that I could do it!” says Nikki. She and her brothers like to spend time on the weekends fixing her boyfriend’s car and her cousin’s motorcycle. “When I was younger, in the back of my mind, I always wanted to be a mechanic.” Nikki’s mom really wants her to go into nursing, but Nikki prefers the chances she’s been given at the local garage while working on the weekends. Nikki’s boyfriend gets grief from the football team about Nikki knowing more about cars than he does. However, she has saved him hundreds of dollars on labor. Nikki’s experience has obviously taught her a lot, but she will soon have to make some career decisions. What programs or classes could lead to apprenticeship? construction “I like to stand back when a project is all done and think about how it started off with a pile of wood and ended up being something people really want to own,” says Lucas with a big grin on his face. Standing beside the newly painted garden shed, he and his friends just finished for a neighbor. “Now I am looking for a bigger challenge. My uncle is putting up a new garage in his backyard, but he is worried about getting good work for a reasonable cost. I think he will give me the work, but he’s not crazy about me being the boss.” What programs or classes could lead to apprenticeship? Where is an apprenticeship program for this career dream?
