2 Classroom Description
9-12th grade Physical Education 40 Students (27 boys - 13 girls) 25 Caucasian students 10 African American Students 5 Latino Students Mid Sized suburban High school located in Kanawha County West Virginia Full Gymnasium with access to football field, track, and tennis courts. Both African American and Latino Students are the Under Represented groups  How many students are from any under-represented groups?  Assuming that the culture of the school is European American, Middle Class and Christian, you can define under-represented groups as African-American, Asian-American, Immigrant (specify country), Moslem, Buddhist, low socio-economic status, etc.  Children can be in more than one under-represented group.

3 Link to Standards (PE.S.1)  Students will demonstrate movement patterns and motor skills needed to perform a variety of physical activities. (PE.S.2)  Students will apply concepts and principles of human movement to the development of motor skills and learning of new skills (PE.S.3) Students will exhibit a physically active lifestyle that provides the opportunity for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction. (PE.S.5) Students will identify and apply responsible, personal and social behaviors in physical activity settings. These standards are important because students need to show that they know how to do the movements required to do the activity and that they can apply the movements to the game or activity they are doing. The bulletin board will be displayed during the lesson on Soccer. Soccer is a universal sport around the world and it brings people from all races together to enjoy and play the sport.

4 Culturally Competent Teacher
Soccer is a sport that is known by everyone worldwide and requires a set of skills that makes for a great unit in Physical Education. This lesson is to show students that it doesn’t matter what background, race, or culture you come from, you can find interest and also similarity's with one another by playing the sport of soccer. This lesson proves to my under represented students that soccer is a sport to which Americans are just getting familiar with. In all south American and Spanish countries, soccer is the national sport and is played and learned by everyone. This allows my underrepresented students to be “experts” in soccer. Specifically, why the lesson and image have potential to help the students improve in a basic skill or in achievement in a specific content area, recognize an adult role model who they can emulate, feel pride in their demographic group, feel accepted and valued in the classroom community.
