Procedure Label 1 tube ‘Control’ and 1 tube ‘Experiment’
To control tube: add 5 mL of 5% Sucrose solution (table sugar and water) and 5 mL of yeast To Experiment tube: <<enter what you are going to change for this tube>> Swirl Use tongs to set tube in hot water bath that’s at 38-40° C for 5 minutes. Make sure the temperature stays constant <<if you are changing temperature tell me how here>> While you wait, turn on your Lab quest and plug in the probe. Let the probe acclimate and 3 minutes record the amount of CO2 in the air Take your tongs and pick up the tube. Pour each warm yeast solution into a respiration chamber. Quickly place the probe in the chamber. Wait 2 minutes for it to equalize. Take your first measurement for time 0 Collect Data every 5 minutes

Questions for Analysis:
Why do you need to incubate the yeast before you start collecting data? Yeast live in many different environments. Make a list of some locations where yeast might naturally grow. Estimate the possible food sources at each of these locations.

Questions for Analysis:
What type of cell respiration is yeast doing and what could you measure to confirm that? When bread is baked, the dough is placed in a warm place to ‘rise.’ However, if you want to bake the bread the next day the dough can be kept overnight in a refrigerator and it won’t rise. Explain why a baker can do this.
