4 : Turning Points Until 1942, there was a long string of Axis successes in Europe and the Pacific The Allied priority was defeating the Axis in Europe first In 1943, the Allies defeated Axis forces in North Africa, which allowed them to attack Italy directly The invasion of Italy helped to weaken the Axis Powers

5 Battle of Stalingrad In the East, German troops failed to advance any further after the Battle of Stalingrad Russians bitterly defended the city, named after Stalin, and fought in the streets and houses of Stalingrad After this battle, the Soviet army went on the offensive and drove the Germans out of the Soviet Union entirely

11 Preparing for D-Day The Allies had been bombing German cities, but had not yet tried to invade Nazi territory Stalin wanted Churchill and Roosevelt to open a second front in Western Europe to take pressure off of his army For over a year, the Allies planned the D-Day invasion, an amphibious attack on Nazi- controlled France

21 D-Day: Success Over a million troops entered France by August 1944 and Paris was liberated by the Allies Hitler refused to surrender and ordered one last battle – the Battle of the Bulge – but the Allies won and closed in on Germany from the West (with the Soviets moving in from the East) Hitler committed suicide on April 20, and Germany surrendered on May 8 – AKA V-E Day
