----- Meeting Notes (10/6/11 10:36) ----- Henri Matisse was a French artist who was known for his brilliant use of color. He was a painter and also a sculptor. Towards the end of his career, he became famous for collage. He considered his collage artwork to be the best art he ever did! What is collage? Pronounced: (ahn-REE mah-TEESS) 1

Collage is... A form of art that uses assemblage. Here are examples of collage work that Matisse did.

Notice how the figure in his work is all black. This is called a silhouette. Also, the person is put into a very interesting pose. Notice that the figure and the stars do not touch one another. This is because he wanted to make the collage feel balanced. Matisse liked to use the primary colors. What are the primary colors? Why did they he like to use the primary colors?

Look at the following works of art by Henri Matisse and identify the types of shape he uses. You should be able to easily recognize work by Matisse due to his unique use of shape.

Your next project is to create a collage using shape, just as Matisse did. You will “draw with scissors” to show an understanding of Matisse-inspired shapes.
