1 6th Grade Unit 1: The Nature of Science
08/21/2017

2 Instructions: You will do the unit and lesson vocabulary listed above and will type the word, provide a definition and at least 2 picture examples for each vocabulary word. You will use my projected power point, your textbook, and the internet as resources to get definitions for your vocabulary words. This is assignment will count is both your daily notes grade and a unit project grade, so it is important to do your very best work. You will also use this vocabulary once finished to make flash cards which you will study for quizzes.

3 Lesson 1: Scientific Knowledge
Pages 4-15 Vocabulary: Empirical Evidence Theory Law

4 Science: What is science: the study of the natural world.
Biology/Life Science: the study of other living things. Geology/Earth Science: Is the study of the Earth: what it’s made of and the processes that shape it. Physics/Physical Science: It is the study of non living matter and energy. Chemistry is included under physical science. Science: The facts of science are simply the most widely accepted explanations. Scientific knowledge is and probably always will be changing.

5 Law: Pg.8 Is a description of a specific relationship under given conditions in the natural world. In other words scientific laws describe the way the world works. They hold anywhere in the universe. You can’t escape them.

6 Theory: Pg. 9 Is a well-supported explanation of nature. Theories help us understand the laws we observe.

7 Empirical Evidence: Pg. 10
Scientific knowledge is based on empirical evidence. Which is all the measurements and data scientists gather in support of a scientific explanation. Scientists get empirical evidence in many different places. Generally, scientific work is categorized as field or laboratory work.

8 Investigations: Pg. Is a procedure carried out to carefully observe, study, or test something in order to learn more about it.

9 Opinion: Pg. Is a personal belief that does not need proof. Examples:
Spiders are really gross. Mr. Forrest is the best science teacher ever.

10 Lesson 2: Scientific Investigations
Pages: 16-33 Vocabulary: Experiment Observation Hypothesis Independent Variable Dependent Variable Data

11 Experiment: Pg.18 Is an organized procedure to study something under controlled conditions. Scientists often conduct experiments to find out the cause of something they have observed.

12 Observation: Pg.19 Scientists can also study the natural world without carrying out experiments. Observation is the process of gathering information by using the senses. The term can also mean the information gathered by using the senses or special tools.

13 Hypothesis: Pg. 20 Is a testable idea or explanation that can be used to design and implement an investigation. A scientist may form a hypothesis after making observations or after reading the results of other investigations. The hypothesis can be tested by experiment or observation.

14 Independent Variable: Pg.21
Is the factor that is deliberately adjusted in an investigation. The hypothesis identifies the independent variable.

15 Dependent Variable: Pg. 21
Is the factor that changes as a result of adjusting the independent variable.

16 Data: Are Information gathered by observation or experimentation that can be used in calculating or reasoning. Everything a scientist observes is recorded. The setup and procedures of an experiment also need to be recorded. By carefully recording this data, scientists will not forget important information.

19 Lesson 3: Science and Society
Read Pages 34-43 Discuss as a class why science is important to society.

20 Why is Science important to all humans?
Food:Growing Plants-(fruit &vegetables) and Animals-(Meat:fish, red meat, white meat) Energy:light, electricity, sound, heat, kinetic energy, potential energy, Magnetism, Nuclear energy, solar energy, wind energy , gasoline, oil, coal. Hospitals, Medicine, Surgery Transportation: Bikes, cars, buses, trains, airplanes, Boats Shelter: houses, buildings, churches, hospitals, sky scrapers, hotels, police stations, fire departments. Technology: computers, tablets, phones, the internet Space:rockets, satellites, tv, going to other planets

21 Scientist Research Project
Today you will research any scientist from history: It can be a man or woman. You will tell me about their life. When they lived and died? Where they lived? You will tell me about what they invented and how it works? Lastly how did their invention make human life better?
