Warm-up You need to fix a plumbing leak at 2:00 a.m. and do not have the money to pay someone nor do you know anyone who you could call. Where could you find the information you need? How do you know it is credible?

Primary Source = Document of physical object which was written or created during the time under study Original Documents = diaries, speeches, interviews, letters… Creative Works = Poetry, drama, novels, music, art… Relics/Artifacts = Pottery, furniture, clothing…

Secondary Sources = A source that interprets or analyzes primary sources. They may include pictures, quotes, or graphics, but are not primary sources. Publications = Textbooks, magazine articles, histories, encyclopedias.

Searching for primary sources: Most sources you find on the internet are secondary sources as the internet was not created until thousands of years after people. However, as primary sources are being scanned into computers as a preservation backup, more and more are available online. Use the following keywords to find primary sources: Charters, diaries, manuscripts, pamphlets, personal narratives, correspondence, speeches…

Primary/Secondary Source Practice
Sort the following into Primary and Secondary Sources. Personal correspondence, encyclopedia, works of art, historical atlas, speeches, biographies, audio and video recordings, battlefield maps, laws, coins, tools, research papers.

Annotation Read through the CRAAP test handout. Highlight what your consider to be the most important part of each section. Write notes and questions in the margin. Complete 3 CRAAP tests for sources related to the origins on Halloween. Use a separate sheet of paper. Be sure to include the website information.

Killian Documents As you read through the Killian article, annotate the article looking for main idea and supporting details. At the bottom of you CRAAP test assignment, answer the following question: Why is it important to have credible sources? Be sure to cite evidence from the article.
