6. HELICOPTER PARENT
~Parents of high school or college-aged students who perform tasks a child is capable of doing alone. Not limited to high school and college, helicopter parenting can occur at any age.
*Constantly calling a teacher/professor about poor grades
*Arranging a class schedule
*Complete college/scholarship applications
*Finding excessive fault with teachers, counselors and coaches
*Expecting child to receive unwarranted credit or privileges
~Consequences of Helicopter Parenting
*Lack of Life & Coping Skills *Illusion of Entitlement *Low Self-Esteem/Confidence
*Angry & Combative *Inability to Handle Emergencies *Anxiety & Panic

-Encourage students to think/dream big
-Give deadlines (college & Scholarships)
-Develop/Implement standards to encourage maturity & responsibility
-Teach money management, laundry, time management &
organization
-Give student the freedom to choose their path
FIND TIME, HOBBIES, ENJOYMENT AND SELF-FULFILLMENT

8. Reminders: Dos and Don’ts
-Be a helicopter parent
-Permit students to be irresponsible
-Withhold important information from student/college such as taxes
-Divorced parents- Only one parent should claim student on income taxes
student(s) can and will lose financial aid eligibility; BE HONEST
-Take out excessive parent loans
