3 Realism vs. Impressionism
Characteristics: Realistic, accurate appearance of the world – almost as clear as a photograph Spontaneous Ordinary people doing ordinary things (LABOROUS) Harmonious colors Faithfulness to observed lighting and atmospheric effects Impressionism Characteristics: Pleasant, comfortable scenes (but still ordinary people doing ordinary things) Painted outdoors Brushstrokes equalized across the canvas Bright colors Forms and objects best appear when the viewer is at a certain distance

In Small Groups A picture will appear on the screen. (It will change every 5 minutes or so.) As a group, decide if the picture is REALISM or IMPRESSIONISM Circle the characteristics it has as you go Choose an artist that you think may have painted it. With 15 minutes left in class, we’ll share what we came up with and go over the correct answers.
