Conventions of English: Anchor 2 Rebekah Schwall
2
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.L.2
Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. This standard also includes phonics instruction in the early grades since phonics instruction assists in spelling later on.

Through the Grades 3rd Grade: Kindergarten:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.3.2.B Use commas in addresses. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.3.2.C Use commas and quotation marks in dialogue. 4th Grade: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.4.2.B Use commas and quotation marks to mark direct speech and quotations from a text. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.4.2.C Use a comma before a coordinating conjunction in a compound sentence. 5th Grade: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.5.2.B Use a comma to separate an introductory element from the rest of the sentence. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.5.2.C Use a comma to set off the words yes and no (e.g., Yes, thank you), to set off a tag question from the rest of the sentence (e.g., It's true, isn't it?), and to indicate direct address (e.g., Is that you, Steve?). Kindergarten: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.K.2.B Recognize and name end punctuation. 1st Grade: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.1.2.B Use end punctuation for sentences. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.1.2.C Use commas in dates and to separate single words in a series. 2nd Grade: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.2.B Use commas in greetings and closings of letters. This is an example of how using punctuation, particularly commas progresses and gets more difficult and complex as you go through the grades. Capitalization starts at capitalizing the first word in a sentence and the pronoun I and in 5th grade doesn’t mention capitalization standards and just expects students to be able to capitalize everything that needs capitalized.

Why is Anchor Standard 2 so Important?
In order to properly communicate in the written form, students need to grasp the basic conventions of standard English. Capitalization: Students who over-generalize the capitalization rule over- capitalize in writing, and in today’s society of text writing, knowing when to properly capitalize proper nouns and the pronoun I is extremely important. Punctuation: Knowing how to properly punctuate a letter and formal writing is essential for college and job applications. If there are sentence fragments or run on sentences it sticks out and is less likely to be chosen compared to an application that is properly punctuated. Spelling: Sometimes spelling is difficult, but once more, students need to be able to differentiate their circumstance and spell the common words correctly and when faced with a challenging word use resources to figure out correct spelling.

In the Classroom 4th Grade Mini Lesson
With conventions of English, any writing/reading activity is an opportunity to teach. You can connect it with math, science, and social studies. The mini lesson I will be implementing is for 4th grade and easy to implement as a bell-ringer and will have everyone involved. Standards used will be: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.4.2.A Use correct capitalization. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.4.2.B Use commas and quotation marks to mark direct speech and quotations from a text. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.4.2.D Spell grade-appropriate words correctly, consulting references as needed. There will also be standards from younger grades that students will have to recall.

Activity 1: Using punctuation marks, correct the following passage:
Have you ever herd the saying “April showers bring May flowers?" That is because April is known for being verry rainy. May is known four being the first warm munth of the year when flowers begin bloooming. People feel better on rainey april days when they think of the warn weather and pretty flours that are right around the corner Once you’ve corrected the passage, turn and talk with a partner or small group about what corrections you’ve made. Did someone correct something you didn’t? Did you disagree on any corrections? How many corrections did you find? Let’s go through them all together. There are 10 corrections

Assessment of Anchor Standard 2
Really easy to assess- mostly summative collect passages over time and look at progress Spelling tests Written passages Formative assessments can be done over time with the daily warmup to see where students are struggling and what needs improved on. Anchor standard 2 is in most curriculum areas and carries over, so it just needs monitored over time.
