1
Mr. Rosten’s Expectations
EQ: How can I be the most successful in science (and other) class(es)?
2
Entering Class There will most likely be a warm up on the board. Write down the answer. Always. If there’s no warm up, sit quietly and await directions. Maybe read a book. Pontificate life perhaps. Don’t be loud. Loud is bad. Quiet is good. Mr. Rosten never yells at a person when entering a room. Don’t yell at Mr. Rosten or be rude. Let him start class.
3
Lecture Time Sometimes Mr. Rosten needs to explain an activity or an idea. It must be silent at these times. It seems extreme, but he wouldn’t be talking to you unless it was important, and people need to hear. Please be polite and try not to wander around the room. Think about other people and not yourself, and wait to get help or chat when the class begins their activity.
4
Work Time Doing work with one another is the reason you’re in this class. Learning from one another is important. You must be kind to one another to do that. You also must stay quiet so people can answer questions, and the best way to stay quiet is simply to focus on your work.
5
Ending Class Put stuff away! There is always a next class. Even a next year. The more organized supplies are kept, the better the school functions as a whole Sit and wait quietly for the bell. If you can’t handle 2-3 minutes of down time, we can simply do work for the entire hour, and I won’t need to give you time to put things away.
6
Food, drink, and other items
Food is not allowed. At all. Gum is allowed. No other candy. You can bring water, and no other beverages, if you like. Be sure to hydrate during the winter. Purses, back packs, hats, hoods, and especially phones, are prohibited. Phones will be taken if seen.
7
Lab Safety: Important Reminders
Any protective equipment given must be worn Absolutely no horseplay (will be talked about later) Chemicals and supplies can only be used for intended purposes Ask for help if you’re confused
8
Assignments Assignments for the day go in the bins labeled for your hour There is a make up bin for late or missed assignments Late assignments will lose points. Grade reports will be given every two weeks
9
Hallway Yelling and running in the hallway are dangerous. It makes people think something is wrong. Horseplay is not only dangerous, but not a proper way to conduct yourself in a place of education. You are all special and intelligent people, and that should be reflected in the way you carry yourself in the hallway.
10
Gossip and complaints When speaking about someone who is not in class to defend themselves, whether a student or a teacher, the following should be followed: Speak only positively . Don’t talk about negative situations Even some positive and funny conversations can be distracting from science learning
11
Horseplay Saving the most important for last:
Keep your hands to yourself. If you touch another student, you will be asked to step outside. If it happens again, a consequence will be enforced that reflects the severity of the offense. “Just playing” is absolutely no excuse, and will not be tolerated.
12
Semi-Adulthood The older you act, the older I can treat you.
The more responsibility you show, the more creative and engaging I can make my assignments. I’m here to teach you, not just science. I want to help you grow. Allow me to hold you to high expectations, and you will reach great heights.
13
Summary Simply act with Faith, Hope, and Charity, and you will be fine. If that’s confusing, then follow this rule of thumb: If it’s not related to learning, it may be distracting or against the rules. Focus on your work.
