2 A new Republic Now that Texas has adopted the new constitution
Sam Houston is elected president

3 Problems Arise Mexico refuses to recognize Texas as an independent nation Houston needs to persuade other nations to recognize Texas as being independent Texas is facing financial problems Native Texans threatening war now that the revolution is over Stephen F. Austin dies

4 New Capital Before Houston is elected president, Columbia is said to be the capital of Texas Due to the belief that the town was too small Houston changes the capital to a new town being built by the Allen brothers. The town is to be called Houston.

5 1st attempt at annexation
When Houston elected president majority voted to seek annexation Several people worked in Washington to persuade the U.S. congress to accept Texas into the Union. Because Texas would have to enter the U.S. as a slave state former president John Quincy Adams fought hard to refuse the annexation Houston withdrew the request after a while because he did not want Texas to be embarrassed by having its request delayed longer

6 Financial Issues Texas is in debt $1 million because of the Texas Revolution Houston raised revenue for necessary items Houston issued $600,000 in promissory notes

7 Trouble in Army General Huston wants to start war with Mexico
To prevent war president Houston tries to replace him, Huston challenges his replacement to a duel and wins Houston then decides to send all 600 soldiers home on leave and never calls them back

8 Native Texan Policy Houston enlists help of Texas Rangers to patrol the frontier and controll the number of Native Texan raides. Houston is sympathetic toward native Texans, but many Texans do not share his view

9 Lamar becomes President
In the election of 1838 Houston could not run again because of the rule in the Texas constitution- A president can only serve for two years and no consecutive term Lamar runs against Peter Grayon and James Collingsworth. Lamar wins

10 Lamar’s view on Native Texans
Unlike Houston who sympathized with the Native Texans Lamar wanted to kill them or run them out of Texas Chief Bowles led the Cherokees out of Tx, General Douglass attacked them in July of 1839 and Bowles died, the Cherokees were forced into present day Oklahoma

11 Council House Fight Comanchees meet the Texas military to make peace, Comanchees say they will release all Anglo-American prisoners The comanchees release one girl, the government is upset and refuse comanchee leaders to leave until all prisoners are release Comanchee claim they have released all prisoners and when leaders tried to leave they were attacked

12 Chief Bowles Cherokee chief who signed a treaty during the Texas Revolution with Houston. Lamar asked him to move Cherokees out of Texas, he refused and was killed Cherokees were moved to present day Oklahoma

13 Relations with Mexico Lamar attempted to improve relations with Mexico, but was not effective Lamar’s vision of a larger more independent Texas created problems with New Mexico as well Even though he was told no by congress Lamar sent troops into New Mexico-when they arrived New Mexicans refused to become part of Texas Without proper supplies to return home the Texas army surrendered to the Mexican government

14 Lamar’s capital Lamar moved his capital to a small comuntiy 100 miles north of San Antonio called….. Waterloo- renamed Austin in honor of Stephen F. Austin

15 Education Lamar is the Father of Education
Lamar set aside 220,000 acres of land for two universities and 18,000 acres for public schools Few schools were actually built during his administration

16 Financial difficulties
Texas’s financial situation got much worse during Lamar’s term Public debt increased to $7 million

17 Lamar’s Land policy Used land to attract new settler and pay debts
Texas constitution granted 4,605 acres to every Anglo family already living in Texas and to every family who immigrated an additional 320 acres an additional 620 acres to those who served in the military Population increased from 34,500 to 100,000 by the end of the Republic

18 Houston’s 2nd Term Houston worked to lesson the government spending
Cut back Lamar’s expansion policies and spent less than $600,000 in his three-year term Brought navy back from Yucatcan

19 Archives War Houston did not like the fact that the capital was in Austin so he held his capital at Washington on the Brazos In order for that to be the actual capital Houston needed the archives from Austin He tried to take them but the citizens of Austin ran his men out of town

20 Annexation Houston again tried for annexation
Texans wanted to be annexed fast, but the vote fell short in the U.S. senate

21 Regulator-Moderator War
Conflict between Harrison and Shelby counties Settlers who wanted end to lawlessness were regulators Moderators wanted to stop excessive use of force Houston sent 600 troops in and violence stopped

22 Elections of 1844/ Statehood
Anson Jones wins the election Both houses approve annexation – joint resolution Texas becomes 28th state

23 Jack Coffee Hays A Texas Ranger who protected frontier towns in central Texas Was also a surveyor and part of the military

24 William Goyens Was a successful freedman who fought during the Texas Revolution. Goyens was a very successful businessman who was a blacksmith and wagon maker during the republic of Texas.

25 Mary Maverick Was a pioneer woman who took notes in a diary about the Republic of Texas through the Civil War. Her diaries are an account of Texas’s history

26 Jose Antonio Navarro Was a Tejano delegate to the Texas congress. Jose was a successful Tejano, who owned a ranch and created a successful colony in Texas.

27 Cordova Rebellion A group of Nacogdoches citizens accidentally uncovered a plot of rebellion against the new Republic of Texas. This incident first appeared to be nothing more than an isolated incident, however it later came out to be a huge incident. The incident proved that Mexicans and Natives in Texas were unhappy with the new government. They felt they did not have any power.
