2. New Netherlands become New York
Area between New England & Southern colonies are the Middle Colonies
Dutch offered land grants to rich families
Patroons: Owners of these land grants
Regulation: 50 European farm families had to settle this land
Advantage= Any religion could come
1664 England fought and won New Netherlands

5. New Jersey New Jersey used to be part of New York New York too big
Set up proprietary colony: King Charles II gave land to one or more people
1702 New Jersey became a royal colony w/ religious freedom

8. Pennsylvania Founded by William Penn
Wealthy personal friend of Charles II
Quaker religion
Believed all men, no matter what the class, everyone was equal in God’s sight
Spoke against war and would not join the military
Quakers were arrested and even hanged

9. Pennsylvania cont. Penn’s Experiment
Wanted to be a model of religious freedom
Believed they should pay the Natives for their land
Natives loved him

10. Pennsylvania cont.
Soon everyone was coming to Philadelphia (Capital of Penn.)
Delaware used to be part of Penn.
William Penn allowed them to break away

11. Land of Plenty Favorable weather in Middle Colonies
Cash crops : wheat, barley, rye
Became known as the “Breadbasket colonies”
Center of crafts and manufacturing
Clocks, watches, locks, guns, glass, nails, etc.
Sold these items all over

12. Town and Country Houses built differently depending on ethnic group
Swedish: Log cabins
Dutch: Red bricked, high-walled
German: Used wood burning stoves
People also headed west into the “backcountry”: area east of Appalachians
Followed an Iroquois trail: “Great Wagon Trail”
