Presentation on theme: "First Foldable: The Cell Cycle"— Presentation transcript:

1 First Foldable: The Cell Cycle
Page 41 in your notebook

2 Flap 1: Gap 1 (G1) - First stage of the cell cycle
- Cell carries out normal functions - Cell increases in size, organelles increase in numbers

3 Flap 2: Synthesis (s) - Second stage of the cell cycle
- The cell makes an identical copy of the DNA in the nucleus

4 Flap 3: Gap 2 (G2) - Third stage of the cell cycle
- Additional growth occurs - Cell goes through a critical checkpoint to make sure everything is in order

5 Flap 4: Mitosis - Final stage of cell cycle
- Division of the cell to create two identical daughter cells - Ends with cytokinesis, the division of the cell cytoplasm

6 Second Foldable: Mitosis
Page 42 in your notebook

7 Flap 1: Prophase - DNA and proteins condense into chromosomes
- The nucleus begins to break down - Centrioles move to opposite poles - Spindle fibers form

8 Flap 2: Metaphase - Spindle fibers attach to each chromosome
- Chromosomes line up along the middle of the cell

9 Flap 3: Anaphase - Chromatids (halves of the chromosomes) separate and move to opposite side of the cell

10 Flap 4: Telophase - Two new nuclear membranes form
- Chromosomes begin to uncoil - Spindle fibers fall apart - Cytokinesis occurs, dividing the cytoplasm between the two daughter cells
