GCG 1: Day 1: EQ: How can you compare fractions with the same size parts?

2 Fun with Quilting Sherlyn and Emily are each making quilt blocks. Both blocks are the same size and both are made of equal size squares. 2/4 of Sherlyn's squares are yellow. ¼ of Emily’s squares are yellow. Whose quilt block has more yellow squares? Model Sherlyn and Emily’s quilts with your fraction tools. Draw a quick picture in your journal. Write a number sentence using < less than or >greater than Explain who has more yellow squares and why.

3 Rock Climbing Challenge!
Nicasky and Sofiu climbed up a rock wall at the park. Nicasky climbed ¾ of the way up the wall. Sofiu climbed 3/8 of the way up the wall. Who climbed higher? Model Nicasky and Sofiu’s climb with your fraction tools. Draw a quick picture in your journal. Write a number sentence using < less than or >greater than Explain who climbed higher and why.

4 Pizza Night Miguel went to Pizza hut. He had a choice to sit with 5 friends at one table or 7 friends at a different table. If each table is sharing an extra large pizza, which table should he sit at in order to get the biggest piece of pizza? Model the problem. Draw a picture in your journal. Write a number sentence using < less than or > greater than Explain which table he should sit at and why.

7 Time for Breakfast! The camp leader is making waffles for breakfast. Sophia ate 3/6 of her waffle. Lisa ate 5/6 of her waffle. Who ate more of her waffle? Model the problem on your number lines. Write a number sentence using < less than or > greater than underneath. Explain who ate more and why.

8 Twirl and Curl… At the craft store, one piece of ribbon is 2/8 yards long. Another piece of ribbon is 7/8 yards long. If Jizyiah wants to buy the shorter piece of ribbon, which piece should she buy? Model the problem on your number lines. Write a number sentence using < less than or > greater than underneath. Explain which piece she should buy and why.

9 Camping On Saturday, the campers paddled 2/8 of their planned route down the river. On Sunday, they paddled 2/3 of their route down the river. On which day did the campers paddle further? Model the problem on your number lines. Write a number sentence using < less than or > greater than underneath. Explain which day the campers paddled further and why.

10 Let’s Climb! At the park, people can climb a rope ladder to its top. David climbed 4/8 of the way up the ladder. Robert climbed 4/6 of the way up the ladder. Who climbed higher on the rope ladder? David climbed farther than Robert. Robert climbed farther than David. David climbed less than Robert. Robert and David climbed the same amount.

11 Snack Time! Leo and Anthony N. each have an equal-sized pan of brownies. Each pan is cut into sixths. Leo ate three brownies, and Anthony N. ate two brownies. Compare the fraction that each boy has left. Model the problem on your number line. Write a number sentence using < less than or > greater than underneath.
