Prose is generally more ‘familiar’ language - spoken by the lower class citizens or when characters are being informal with each other.
Mercutio (and Romeo and Benvolio) speaks in prose in scene iv. Why? What is Shakespeare trying to tell us about his character?

If you could speak to them, and offer advice - what would you say?

Today, you are going to write a letter to Romeo OR Juliet.
You should introduce yourself, and explain to them why they should listen to you.
You have all class to write your letter.

Be creative! What advice do you think would help the most? Do you think they would listen if you spoke with “thees” and “thous”?
You must make sure to refer to SPECIFIC events in the play (such as Romeo’s banishment or Tybalt’s death) when you offer them help.
You may refer to anything they have said in the play WITHOUT citing it! This is the ONLY time you can get away without citing quotes.
Ex. “I remember you said that your love was as boundless as the sea…”
