What are two reasons why the United States would want to remain neutral when WWI began on July 28, 1914 in Europe? Why would it be dangerous for Americans to travel overseas during WWI?

1. Cultural and Ethnic Links – many American were taking sides based on cultural and ethnic connections to the countries in Europe. (Many supporting the Allies)

3. Propaganda – Allied nations conducted an effective propaganda campaign in the United States. They depicted the war as a battle between civilized, democratic nations against a barbaric monarchy in Germany.

4. Unrestricted Submarine Warfare – Germany set up a blockade using submarines (U-Boats) to stop the trade between the Allies and the United States. America believed in the freedom of the seas (A principle that neutral nations have a right to trade with nations at war.) A British ship, the Lusitania, was attacked by German and the US broke off diplomatic relations with Germany.

5. In March 1, 1917 – Great Britain intercepted the Zimmerman Telegram between Germany and Mexico. It urged a German military alliance with Mexico, promising Mexico support in regaining lost territories in the southwestern United States.
