6
General: Hemorrhage Control Protocol
7
Review: Extremity Laceration
Attempt to control bleeding with gauze Attempt to control bleeding with gauze and roller gauze Attempt to control bleeding with hemostatic gauze Attempt to control bleeding with all the above + tourniquet (2-3 inches above the wound but not on a joint) Additional tourniquets can be added as necessary Treat for shock Make sure you are applying direct pressure at all times when attempting to control bleeding
8
Review: Trunk Injury-Bleeding
Direct Pressure with Gauze Direct Pressure with Hemostatic Gauze Wound Packing Treat for Shock
9
Review: Head/Neck/Face Laceration
Direct Pressure with Gauze Direct Pressure with Hemostatic Gauze You can wrap with roller gauze If neck --> wrap around one side of the neck and then to the opposite shoulder If head consider wrapping around the base of the head/chin for extra pressure
10
Nose Bleeds- Anterior vs. Posterior
Direct Pressure with Gauze Consider ice pack (Trick wrap ice pack in roller gauze and apply to pt.’s nose) Have the pt. lean their head forward and stay low to the ground (in case of LOC/dizziness/nausea) Consider using hemostatic gauze or regular gauze to pack the nose and apply continuous pressure If a nose bleed is severe enough (Posterior) blood can start coming out of pt.’s tear ducts or mouth consider suction
11
Penetrating Trauma Stabilize object in place
If there is a penetrating eye injury- be sure to cover both eyes to prevent consensual movement The only time it would be appropriate to remove an object would be if it interferes with CPR Treat for shock
12
Chest Trauma
13
Crush Injury Splint an extremity after it is free
Elevated blood potassium levels can result from crush injuries Hyperkalemia Potassium is critical for muscle and nerve function (especially the heart) This is why it might be necessary to consult a physician in the field they can consider amputations
15
Musculoskeletal Trauma
Closed Fracture Manual Stabilization Splint: Hard Boards, SAM, Fracture Pack, Sling/Swathe, Pillow/Blanket, Traction Check CMS Consider an Ice Pack if appropriate Consider pain management Open Fracture Cover an open fracture with dry sterile gauze to prevent infection Do your best to control bleeding without causing further injury Call for Pain Management Splint Hard Boards, Fracture Pack, SAM Splint, Pillow/blanket/ Sling Check CMS before and after
