Grammar Warm-up: Colon Definition: “The most important thing to remember about colons (:) is that you only use them after statements that are complete sentences…[Usually] the items after the colon expand on or clarify what came before the colon…[Finally,] never use a colon after a sentence fragment” (Grammar Girl). Gladwell Examples: “He’s just out-learning her: he’s putting in a few solid months of learning during the summer while she watches television and plays outside” (Gladwell 259). “The extra time gave Corcoran the chance to make mathematics meaningful: to let his students see the clear relationship between effort and reward” (Gladwell 262). Write-alike: Write three sentences that each have a colon. Your topic could be Color Day.
