Media is about messaging It refers to the communication of information through various ways.

Different types of media
There are three main types of media: Paid media - Publicity or awareness that has been paid for or purchased, such as advertising (TV, print, online) or direct mail campaigns Owned media - Communications managed through your own platforms, such as your website or social media platforms Earned media - Editorial coverage or mentions reported by third parties, such as news organizations, social media channels not owned by you or word of mouth Media can also be classified as old media or new media

Old Media Old media or traditional media includes broadcast and print sources such as TV, newspaper, radio, magazines and flyers Key characteristics: - Typically one-way communication - Delivered at a specific time (i.e. the 6:00 p.m. news) - Limited geographic reach - Strives to maintain journalistic integrity and standards

New Media New media is content that is easily accessible on devices through the internet, such as online sources and social media platforms Key characteristics: - Interactive (two-way) - Guided by the user - Borderless - Operates in real-time (immediate)

The News Media The news media play an important role in contributing to a healthy democracy It is their job to inform citizens about current affairs and ensure that our politicians are honest and open, and are held responsible for their actions

Facts vs. Opinions In most cases, the news media provides factual coverage to inform the public without letting opinions (biases) interfere The news media also produces opinion pieces or editorials, where their editorial team, or columnists or pundits will openly share their opinions and analysis (commentary)

Opinion or Fact? The government is to blame for the out-of-control housing market The government has invested $29 million for supplies and resources to help reduce costs for parents and teachers to deliver B.C.’s new curriculum The best way to support families is to increase support for childcare The graduation rate has increased 2% among B.C. students over the last two years

The Roles of News Media in an Election
Report on the events and developments of an election Provide a way for parties/candidates to share their messages and ideas Provide a way for citizens to communicate their concerns and opinions Promote debate between the candidates/parties Advertise the election process to voters Report on the election results
