Introduction The Iditarod started because of a deadly disease called diptheria the people in Alaska started a race with dogs and mushers there are checkpoints to stop at and you get 1 24 hour stop at any checkpoint . At the end there is one winner.

Musher Kristy Berington Bib Number: 20 Hometown: Knik, Alaska
She is 34, She moved to Alaska 11 years ago to learn more about mushing from 1984 Iditarod Champion Dean Osmar in Kasilof.This is Kristy’s 9th running of the Iditarod.

DOGS The dogs can wear booties,a harness,and coats the mushers start with 15 or 16 dogs they lose a couple of dogs throughout the race because of illness or they are hurt.

Routes & Checkpoints The routes are different every year.
The Iditarod always ends in Nome. This year’s Iditarod was 1,048 miles long . This year there were 19 checkpoints. It starts in Anchorage

Awards Wells Fargo Bank Alaska Gold Coast Award-Presented to the first musher to reach the ‘’Gold Coast ‘’community of Unalakleet. PenAir Spirit of Alaska Award -Presented to the first musher to reach McGrath. Red Lantern Award-Presented to the last musher to finish.
