TSHAC Legislatively mandated TSHAC Legislative Charge
TEA, TDA required by law DSHS appointed by rules TSHAC Legislative Charge “provide assistance to the council in establishing a leadership role for the department in support for and delivery of coordinated school health programs and school health services.” In 2005, the 79th legislature passed SB42. This comprehensive school health education package focused on a number of significant issues; one of which was the establishment of a state-level school health advisory committee at the Department of State Health Services (DSHS). TSHAC

TSHAC Required to meet 2 times a year
Members elected to meet every other month (5 times a year) Rules outline membership that represents 8 components of coordinated school health Representative from each of the following: Physical Education Health Education Health Services Nutrition Services Guidance and Counseling School Administration (2) Organizations focused on school age children (4) Parents (5) Currently recruiting for the following: 2 parents, 1 physician*, 1 organization

School Health Advisory Council
Annual Progress Report to School Board 5/21/2019 School Health Advisory Council Every independent school district is required by law to have a school health advisory council (SHAC) of which the majority of members must be parents who are not employed by the school district. The SHAC is annually appointed by the local education agency Board of Trustees. Texas Education Code Title 2, Chapter 28, Section 10

The National Health Education Standards
The National Health Education Standards (NHES) are written expectations for what students should know and be able to do by grades 2, 5, 8, and 12 to promote personal, family, and community health. The standards provide a framework for curriculum development and selection, instruction, and student assessment in health education.
