1 Unit 2: Ecological organization

2 Organism The simplest denomination of life within a system Example:

3 Population A group of organisms within a certain area that belong to the species Example:

4 community Consists of all organisms, all the populations of different species, that in habit an area, these are called biotic factors Example: Interacting populations of hunting dogs and wildebeest Note: not just animals, but plants as well

5 ecosystems The non-living, including temperature, energy, and water, and living things within an area, these are called abiotic factors Example:

6 biome Several communities found around the world with the same characteristics, including major life forms Geography and climate (temperature and precipitation) determine the biome Tundra, Boreal Forest, Temperate Forest, Tropical Rain Forest, Grassland, Desert (Terrestrial Biomes)

7 Biome Example: Grassland

8 biosphere The world (Earth)
Composed of many ecosystems where organisms interact with their environment

9 Another example __________________: Lemming

10 Example continued Population _______________
Lemming populations fluctuate greatly from year to year, and even migrate as a group _______________ Many other artic species are dependent on lemming populations

11 Example continued _________________: Artic Tundra Biome: _________
Biosphere: Earth
