10.8 Spheres Geometry

Definitions: Sphere: the locus of point in space that are a fixed distance from a given point called the Center of a sphere. Radius of sphere: connects the center of the sphere to any point on the sphere Hemisphere: Half of a sphere Great circle: divides a sphere into two hemispheres

Diagram:

Volume of a Sphere:

Example: Find the volume of the sphere.

Example: Find the diameter of a sphere with volume 36,000π cm3.

Example: Find the volume of the hemisphere.

Example: Find the radius of a sphere with volume π ft3

Example: A sporting goods store sells exercise balls in two sizes, standard (22 in. diameter) and jumbo (34 in. diameter). How many times as great is the volume of a jumbo ball as the volume of a standard ball?

Example: A hummingbird eyeball has a diameter of approximately 0.6 cm. How many times as great is the volume of a human eyeball (8.18 cm3) as the volume of a hummingbird eyeball?

Surface Area of a Sphere

Example: Find the surface area of a sphere with a diameter of 76 cm

Example: Find the volume of a sphere with a surface area of 324π in2

Example: Find the surface area of a sphere with a great circle that has an area of 49π mi2

Example: Find the surface area of the sphere.

Example: The radius of the sphere is multiplied by Describe the effect on the volume.

Example: The radius of a sphere is divided by 3. Describe the effect on the surface area.

Example: Find the surface area and volume of the composite figure.

Example: Find the surface area and volume of the composite figure.
