A. The Creation of Yugoslavia
Yugoslavia was created after WWI from land from the Austria-Hungary empire as a home for Slavs, an ethnic group with no homeland 6 republics in one nation: Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, Slovenia, Montenegro Combination of Christians and Muslims and other ethnic groups – hostility and ethnic tension

B. Yugoslavia during the Cold War
1945: a communist nation led by Tito Tito’s harsh rule kept peace and order among the ethnic groups 1980: Communist ruler Tito died.

C. Collapse of Yugoslavia
Ethnic groups in Yugoslavia break away and declare independence: Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina Only two republics remain in Yugoslavia: Serbia and Montenegro

D. Bosnian Civil War 1992: Bosnian Serbs wage war against Muslims in Bosnia Serbs aided by Yugoslavian President Milosevic Led an “oppressive regime” – harsh dictator Ethnic cleansing: Milosevic systematically killed Muslims in great numbers –Muslim genocide.

E. The Dayton Accord Peace Treaty
1995: a peace agreement (Dayton, Ohio) between Serbs and the Muslims The United Nations sent in troops to keep the peace, ineffective NATO launched air strikes against Milosevic 2000: Milosevic is overthrown. 2003: Yugoslavia is divided-two countries: Serbia & Montenegro
