1 Natural Selection

2 What is Natural Selection?
Organisms that are best adapted for an environment survive Sometimes called Survival of the Fittest

3 What is a fitness? Adaptation Fitness
Characteristic that increases fitness Fitness Ability to survive and reproduce Offspring must be able to survive

4 What adaptation would increase the white turtle’s fitness?

5 Evolution due to Natural Selection
An organism acquires inheritable traits that increases its ability to survive Successive generations inherit the traits that increase their ability to survive and reproduce Over long period of time the trait is reflected throughout the population Traits MUST be inheritable

6 Evolution due to Natural Selection
Ex: white turtle will not survive in nature (no evolution) If sea becomes white, then white turtle will have the advantage, thus green turtles become less likely to survive

7 Real Life Examples of Natural Selection
Charles Darwin’s finches Different traits for body and beak size were more successful based on the available food and competition on individual islands. Therefore, all of the 13 species of finches look similar, however overtime have evolved into different species.

9 Peppered Moths of Manchester, England
Before the industrial revolution, the trunks of the trees were light gray, and the majority of the moths that lived in the trees were white. Pollution from the growth of industry led to the tree trunks to become a darker color, and over a period of 45 years, the majority of the moths living in the trees were now a darker color.

11 Summary: Explain why the pepper moth population may have changed colors? Can they change color because the need to? Explain.
