3 Key Points Naming Compounds:
Naming Ionic (Metal + Non-metal) Compounds w/o Transitional Metals: Example: NaCl= Sodium Chloride *Example: Calcium Chloride= CaCl2 Be sure to explain that the 2 is not represented as roman numerals because it is implied that calcium has 2 valence electrons and the 2 electrons lost will go to 2 different chlorine atoms. However, with metals that are transitional we have to use roman numerals to represent the charge since they do not have a set valence #

4 Key Points Naming Ionic Compounds w/ Transitional Metals (ROMAN NUMERALS): *Same rules for Ionic EXCEPT roman numerals must be used to represent the charge of a transitional metal *Example: HgCl3= ______________________________ *Example: Lead (IV) Oxide= _________________________
