The Epistle To The Philippians
Attitude Adjustment
2
Reminder Of Last Week’s Sermon
Paul’s joy was tied up in the unity, selfless attitude of strong Christians. With the joy, encouragement, love, etc. offered by Christ, we can live humbly as servants to one another. We can strive for absolute unity in thought, mind, and spirit. We are not to be selfish, looking only to our own needs, but rather to be selfless – looking to the needs of one another.
3
Our Greatest Example Phil. 2:5 – “Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus….” We must exercise an attitude adjustment to be in line with Jesus our Lord!
4
Today’s Text: Phil. 2:5-11 “Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
5
Have This Attitude Phil. 2:5-8 – “Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”
6
Which Was Also In Christ
Who was born to die for the sins of others Ephesians 5:2 – “…and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.” Anointed from eternity to do so Psalm 2:6 -- “But as for Me, I have installed My King upon Zion, My holy mountain.”
7
Jesus Foreordained To Die
1 Peter 1:17-21 – “If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth; knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ. For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you who through Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.”
8
He Existed In The Form Of God
Hebrews 1:1-2 – “God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.”
9
Matthew 22:41-46 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question: “What do you think about the Christ, whose son is He?” They said to Him, “The son of David.” He said to them, “Then how does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, until I put Your enemies beneath Your feet”’? If David then calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his son?” No one was able to answer Him a word, nor did anyone dare from that day on to ask Him another question.”
10
Did Not Consider Equality With God
HARPAGOS = plunder, robbery Meaning: Did not consider it necessary for Him to maintain His deity. Emptied Himself: KENOW – of deity, it is obvious Took the form of: MORPHE – He “morphed” into a human form Became a slave: DOULOS
11
Accepted Death On A Cross
Galatians 3:13 – “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us— for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.” Deut. 21: “If a man has committed a sin worthy of death and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree, his corpse shall not hang all night on the tree, but you shall surely bury him on the same day (for he who is hanged is accursed of God), so that you do not defile your land which the Lord your God gives you as an inheritance.”
12
II. God Highly Exalted Him
Never exalt yourself Matt. 23:12 – “Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.” God is the One who exalts 1 Corinthians 15:27-28 – “For He has put all things in subjection under His feet. But when He says, “All things are put in subjection,” it is evident that He is excepted who put all things in subjection to Him. When all things are subjected to Him, then the Son Himself also will be subjected to the One who subjected all things to Him, so that God may be all in all.”
13
God Exalted Jesus Matthew 26:64 – Jesus said to him, “You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.” 1 Peter 3:22 – “…who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him.”
14
God Gave Him The NAME What name is that?
Some say it is YAHWEH, or Lord. If so… Romans 10:9 – “…that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved….”
15
I Say The NAME is SON OF GOD
Hebrews 1:4-9 – “… having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they. For to which of the angels did He ever say, “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You”? And again, “I will be a Father to Him And He shall be a Son to Me”? And when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says, “And let all the angels of God worship Him.” And of the angels He says, “Who makes His angels winds, And His ministers a flame of fire.” But of the Son He says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, and the righteous scepter is the scepter of His kingdom. “You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness above Your companions.”
16
1 John 5:5 Who is the one who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
17
The Name Above Every Name
Ephesians 1:21 – “…far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.” Isaiah 52:13-15 – “Behold, My servant will prosper, He will be high and lifted up and greatly exalted. Just as many were astonished at you, My people, So His appearance was marred more than any man and His form more than the sons of men. Thus He will sprinkle many nations, kings will shut their mouths on account of Him….”
18
Every Knee…Every Tongue
Isaiah 45:22-23 – “Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other. “I have sworn by Myself, the word has gone forth from My mouth in righteousness and will not turn back, that to Me every knee will bow, every tongue will swear allegiance….”
19
Full Circle: Which Brings Glory To God
Psalm 148:13 – “Let them praise the name of the Lord, for His name alone is exalted; His glory is above earth and heaven.” Psalm 115:1 – “Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to Your name give glory because of Your lovingkindness, because of Your truth.”
