Nonprofit Bicycle Advocacy Organization
BikeHouston Nonprofit Bicycle Advocacy Organization Mission: Create safe bikeways to improve the quality of life for all Houstonians. Introduce BikeHouston: We were originally founded as an all volunteer organization in In 2014, with a grant from the Houston Endowment, BikeHouston became a professionally staffed organization with 6 staff members. Today we represent over 1.5 million bike owners in Houston.

BikeHouston at Work Advocacy & Education
In March 2017, BikeHouston spearheaded the successful effort to develop and pass Houston’s first comprehensive Bike Plan in more than 20 years Why is it important? The Bike Plan provides infrastructure recommendations and a policy roadmap to make Houston a “gold level” bicycle-friendly city by 2025 The Plan represents recognition from the city council that bike infrastructure is important. The Plan is a commitment by the city to take action. And a tool for us to hold the city accountable to the plan. So let’s take a look at where we are and where we’d like to be So let’s take a look a where we are now, and where we hope to be in 2025

259 miles of bikeways This is our starting point, currently the city has around 260 miles bikeway or an inventory of where we are in regards to bikeways

Long Term Vision by 2025 This is where we’d like our city to be by 2025 This is an aggressive plan, and it won’t happen without community support.

10 feet wide or more

a. Low Comfort Definitions: ROW- Right of way (available space in roadway) High comfort bikeway (generally)- at least 5’wide with a 3’ buffer (Chapter 17, Houston Design Manual) b. High Comfort

Only appropriate on roads that have a posted speed limit of 30mph or less

Campaign developed by BikeHouston to challenge the city, county, and area implementers to build 50 miles of high comfort bikeway by May Both Mayor Sylvester Turner and Commissioner Ellis agreed to the challenge and Commissioner ellis allocated 10 million dollars to implement the vision. Fun fact, this 10 million expires in May 2019.
