Environmental N/A W A R N I N G Quality Assurance N/A C A U T I O N Benzene in Water by Purge and Trap Analysis 1 Check helium gas pressure – gauge is located on front of GC (labeled Column Head Pressure). 2 If gas pressure is below the black mark, check the gas tank(s) in cylinder area outside front of lab. 2a If tank gas pressure is below 500 p.s.i., change lines to full tank(s). 3 Turn on UV lamp by flipping power switch on controller box. 4 Put lamp setting to 2. 5 If necessary, log on to Eclipse Purge and Trap instrument – User ID and Password are “4660”. 6 Filter sample(s) using 1 or 2 P-8 filter paper circles. 7 Draw 5 ml sample aliquot into glass syringe. 8 Remove luer-tip needle and attach syringe to luer-lok injection port on Eclipse instrument. 9 Open valve while simultaneously pressing syringe plunger to inject sample into the trap. 10 Close valve once all sample is dispensed. 11 Press red activate button located on relay. 12 Ensure sample begins bubbling vigorously (purge gas indicator display should read around 7.5 p.s.i.). 12a If purge gas exceeds 10 p.s.i. check trap system for blockage. 13 Once sample analysis is complete, check print-out to ensure peak integration is accurate. (Benzene elutes at approximately 1.8 minutes.) q Procedure Completed Date: Prepared By: Approved By:
