1 C/L Wednesday 6th June 2018 LESSON OBJECTIVE:
Act 2 Scene 4 Conflict LESSON OBJECTIVE: To identify male aggression and sexual connotations in this scene. LESSON OUTCOME: To make links of male aggression and conflict across the play.

2 5-a-day 1 2 3 4 5 What happened in Act 2 Scene 2 of R+J?
What is hyperbolic language? 3 Who says “we are all members of one body” 4 What does it mean in War Photographer when it says “all flesh is grass” 5 What do the Cratchit family eat on Christmas Day?

3 5-a-day 1 Romeo jumps the Capulet wall. Juliet proclaims they should marry the next day. They both have soliloquys. Juliet seems demanding in this scene “doff thy name” and Romeo uses lots of light imagery “Juliet is the sun”. Romeo uses blazon language and is unrealistic compared to Juliet. 2 Hyperbolic language means exaggerative. 3 The inspector says this to show everyone has social responsibility. 4 “all flesh is grass” shows that everyone dies and becomes the earth- shows the war photographer sees everything as death now. 5 The Cratchit eat a goose on Christmas day but are delighted!

4 Act 2 scene 4 Tybalt challenged Romeo to a duel when he was at the ball in Act 1 Scene 5 he was extremely angry and said it was making his “flesh tremble” In this scene Benvolio and Mercutio are talking about it. Romeo and Mercutio tease each other and the religious language he used before with Juliet has gone. The Nurse arrives to tell Romeo to meet at the Friar’s at 2pm. Romeo and Mercutio speak rudely to the Nurse. Romeo asks the Nurse to get Juliet to go to confession this afternoon. She will marry in secret. The Nurse agrees but doesn’t hold back in saying that Juliet she really marry Paris.

5 This scene is full of sexual innuendoes and language about conflict which JUXTAPOSES Romeo’s religious language in Act 1 Scene 5 and light imagery in Act 2 Scene 2 Lads, lads, lads!

6 Romeo Benvolio (Romeo’s cousin) Mercutio (Romeo’s friend) Let’s read Look out for how they speak about fighting and sex. Is this far away from the previous scene when Romeo said things like “Juliet is the sun”?

15 Nurse Is your man secret? Did you ne’er hear say, Two may keep counsel, putting one away? Romeo Warrant thee nurse my man’s as true as steel Well, sir, my mistress is the sweetest lady- Lord, Lord! When ‘twas a little prating thing- O, there is a nobleman in town, one Paris, that would fain lay knife aboard; but she, good soul, had as lieve see a toad, a very toad, as I see him. I anger her sometimes, and tell her Paris is the properer man, but I’ll warrant you, when I say so, she looks pale as any clout in the versal world Doth not rosemary and Romeo begin both with a letter? Starting with this extract, how does Shakespeare present the Nurse’s relationship with Juliet? Use 1 or 2 quotations from this extract. Then use a quotation from an earlier scene between the Nurse and Juliet (You are responsible for finding this because you need to be more confident at looking at the whole play)

16 Act 2 Scene 3: Evaluating the Friar and Romeo’s Love
Tuesday 5th June 2018 C/L Act 2 Scene 3: Evaluating the Friar and Romeo’s Love LESSON OBJECTIVE: To understand what happens in Act 2 Scene 3. LESSON OUTCOME: To explain how the Friar foreshadows events.

17 Friar laurence Catholic Priest.
Seems to have a relaxed attitude to religion. He wants to unite the two families. Before the wedding ceremony his words foreshadows their deaths. It is his idea for Juliet to fake her death with poison. By the end of the play he says he knows his actions were wrong but they had good intentions of bringing peace.

18 His soliloquy Romeo runs to the Friar’s cell to ask him to marry him and Juliet. The Friar is picking weeds and plants with medicinal properties when he rambles on about a particular flower. This flower smells lovely and when you smell it you feel good. However, inside it is poisonous. The Friar says this is the same with humans: we have bad and good mixed inside of us.

19 The Friar says this is the same with humans: we have bad and good mixed inside of us.
Inside your flower write down this crucial part from the Friar’s soliloquy “in man as well as herbs, grace and rude will and where the worser is predominant. Full soon the canker death eat up that plant”

20 AROUND YOUR FLOWER ANALYSE THE QUOTATION
2. Explain how you think this foreshadows the tragedy in the play. The Friar is foreshadowing the tragedy at the end of the play because… Sum up what the quotation actually means. This means… 3. Give your opinion on how “where the worser is predominant full soon the canker death eats up” is a metaphor for the family feud. I think this is a metaphor for the family feud because… 4. What does the phrase “grace and rude” mean?

21 You have 1 minute to find 3 quotations that show the friar is using blasphemous language

22 Holy Saint Francis, what a change is here
Holy Saint Francis, what a change is here! Is Rosaline, that thou didst love so dear, So soon forsaken? Young men’s love then lies Not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes

23 Jesu Maria, what a deal of brine Hath wash’d they sallow cheeks for Rosaline How much salt water thrown away in waste To season love, that of it doth not taste!

24 The old groans yet ringing in mine ancient ear Lo here upon thy cheek the stain sit Of an old tear that is not wash’d off yet. If e’er thou was thyself, and these woes thine Thou and those woes were all for Rosaline

25 And art thou changed? Pronounce this sentence: Women may fall, when there’s no strength in men

26 Comprehension questions
1.) What does he mean when he says “Young men’s love then lies not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes”? 2.) When he says “the old groans yet ringing in they ancient ear” he means that he heard Romeo moan about Rosaline only a day before. Can you find 2 quotations from Act 1 to show that Romeo has only recently been moaning about Rosaline? 3.) Is the Friar convinced that Romeo has moved on when he says “art thou changed?” 4.) He says at the end “there’s no strength in men”. Why is he calling Romeo weak?

27 “Holy Saint Francis” “Jesu Maria” “Benedicte!”
Shows how Friar Laurence has a relaxed attitude to his religion. Is he trustworthy? “Holy Saint Francis” “Jesu Maria” “Benedicte!”

28 Make a revision card of your own for the friar please
