1 CONSUMER PREFERENCES FOR IMPROVED COOK-STOVES IN MALAWI
By: Joyce Grevulo Minofu

2 OUTLINE BACKGROUND METHODOLOGY KEY FINDINGS

3 BACKGROUND Research show that ICS adoption has been low and slow with claims that ICS technologies are not widely adopted because they do not conform to user preferences and local cooking environment ( Meyer et al., 2015, Jeuland et al., 2013, Jueland et al., 2015, Lewis and Pattanayak, 2012 and Whittington et al., ). WTP study presented at CCC 2017 addressed the issue by finding factors that influence ICS choice and WTP Participatory Needs assessment to address the problem of low and slow adoption of ICS.

4 Background Specifically,
To identify community’s perspectives on the current improved cook-stove design. To document design parameters that may enhance the adoption and use of ICS.

5 METHODOLOGY Study Area was Salima in T.A Kambwiri
Data Collection Methods Observation Key-Informant Interviews In-depth Interviews Focus Group Discussion

6 KEY FINDINGS

7 Main Cooking Devices

8 Reasons for diverting from ICS
TLC ROCKET STOVE CHITETEZO MBAULA It is fixed hence hard to tend fire Not very durable Unable to accommodate big chunks of wood Requires very dry firewood insufficient fire to warm up the environment inability to support big pots

9 Preferred ICS Design Parameters
Stove efficiency; firewood saving as compared to 3-stone firewood stove. Portability; Stove they can move to any desired place or shift to wind direction. Less weight stoves with insulated stove handles would be preferred. Durability; pple use 3-4 stoves in a space of 3 years. Some can`t afford to replace it such often. More durable ICS design is preferred.

10 Preferred ICS Design Parameters
Firewood stand; Easy firewood arrangement in the combustion chamber of Chitetezo Mbaula. The proposed ICS design; portable, durable with firewood stand and insulated stove handle

11 Preferred ICS Design Parameters

12 Preferred ICS Design Parameters

13 STUDY CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATIONS
Main cooking devices in Salima; 3-stone, Chitetezo Mbaula, TLC Rocket stove and kenyan Jiko. Each cooking device had its shortfalls that led cooks to shift from using one stove to another. Desired stove was reported to be firewood efficient, portable and durable with firewood stand, insulted stove handles and less weight
