Rules for using Quotation marks
2
Dialogue is… A speaker’s exact words Surrounded by quotation marks
"I love flowers," said Jessie. Jessie said that she loves flowers.
3
Quotation Marks Use quotation marks to begin the quote and to end the quote. They only surround EXACTLY what the person said. Miss Swanson, sitting on the counter, screamed, “There’s a mouse in our house!”
4
Commas and Periods Ending commas and periods are always placed inside the closing quotation marks. Example: "I like chips," said Milly. Jason replied, "I love pretzels." Jasmine asked, “What’s for dinner?”
5
Introducing quotations
Use a comma to introduce a quotation after a dialogue tag. Capitalize the first word in the quotation. Tyler replied, "Blue is my favorite color.“ Looking around the room, Mr. Schlenker asked her, “Are you sure it was a mouse?”
6
New Paragraphs Make a new paragraph for each new speaker, no matter how short the quote. Indent new paragraphs “Absolutely not!” cried Hannah. Marjorie screamed back, “You always make the decisions, I’m so sick of you!” “I’m sick of you, too,” yelled Hannah, “but we’re stuck with each other.” “Whatever,” replied Marjorie.
