Motives behind imperialism
Economic Motives Natural Resources (cotton, sugar, etc) – needed to make more goods Place to sell goods Make $$$ Everyone else was doing it! Manifest destiny

Hawaii – middle of the Pacific – good place to refuel a boat Build Pearl Harbor (navy base) B. Power!

3. Ideological (Beliefs) Motives
Racism: belief that your ethnic group is superior to another’s (doing that country a favor by taking them over!) Social Darwinism Spread Christianity

US put a tax on foreign sugar --- Hawaii was a foreign country Dole wanted to annex (take over) HI so didn’t have to pay tax
