Hoover’s attitude towards the Depression
Thought confidence and private action would solve the economic problems Eventually tried the Hawley-Smoot Tariff and Reconstruction Finance Corporation (RFC), as well as creating jobs through some government spending: Hoover Dam

Hawley-Smoot Tariff HIGHEST import tax in history Didn’t work
Europeans raised their tariffs on U.S. goods Resulted in a worsening of international economies because it basically halted trade

RFC Lent money to banks -- (Banks still failed)
Reflected idea of more wealth at the top will trickle down to the average person (trickle down theory) looked like the government was helping out the wealthy and big business while the average person went hungry

Hoover in 1932 Seemed cold and hard-hearted
All Republicans (except one) lost their seats in Congress

Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR)
Promised a “new deal” for Americans No one really knew what it meant, except they thought FDR was actually going to do something New Deal: came to refer to the relief, recovery, and reform programs of FDR’s administration aimed at combating the Great Depression
