Figure 1 Histopathological analysis of collagen in adult female and male mouse tissues. Skin, lung, and kidney samples from mice at 16 wk of age were processed and stained with Masson's trichrome as described (see Materials and Methods). Collagen staining appears blue. (a, e, i) Wild-type female skin, lung and kidney, respectively; (b, f, j) wild-type male skin, lung, and kidney, respectively; (c, g, k) ArTfm/X female skin, lung, and kidney, respectively; (d, h, l) ArTfm/Y male skin, lung. and kidney, respectively. Compare the thickness of the collagen-containing dermal layer in a–d. Note the increased perivascular and peribronchiolar collagenous tissue in lung samples f and h compared with e and g. Most staining of the kidney appears in the glomeruli regions. Pictures were taken at × 200 magnification Journal of Investigative Dermatology , DOI: ( /j X x) Copyright © 2004 The Society for Investigative Dermatology, Inc Terms and Conditions

Figure 2 Dependence on age of hydroxyproline content in male and female mouse skin, lung and kidney. Mice of 2, 5, 8, 12, and 16 wk of age were used for this study. (a) Skin samples were taken with a 4 mm biopsy punch from the middle of the dorsum. (b) Lungs and (c) kidneys were dissected immediately after euthanasia. Black squares represent males; black dots represent females. Each point of the graph represents the mean±SD. Statistical analyses of differences in hydroxyproline content are shown in Table I Journal of Investigative Dermatology , DOI: ( /j X x) Copyright © 2004 The Society for Investigative Dermatology, Inc Terms and Conditions
