Naming Ionic Compounds
Cations - Positively charged ions (can be metals or polyatomic ions) Anions - Negatively charged ions *The cation is always named first!!* For metals with only one possible charge, the name of the metal is used (ex: Group I (1+), Group II (2+), Silver (1+), Zinc (2+), Aluminium (3+)… For metals with more than one charge, the name of the metal is used, followed by the charge in Roman numerals in parentheses (ex: Copper (II) or Copper (III)…) OR by using the suffix -ous for the lowest charge and -ic for the highest charge and sometimes with the Latinised name for the metal (ex: ferric, ferrous, cuprous, cupric…)

Naming Ionic Compounds
The ammonium ion (NH4+) is an example of a polyatomic cation The hydroxide ion (OH-) is an example of a polyatomic anion Hydrogen can be a cation or anion: H+ = Hydrogen (cation) H- = Hydride (anion) Anions can be a negatively charged element or a polyatomic ion Negatively charged elements have the suffix -ide ex: Oxide (O2-), Sulfide (S2-), fluoride (F-)…

Naming Ionic Compounds
Example: MgO CATION: Mg2+ is a metallic ion named Magnesium ANION: O2- is a nonmetallic ion named Oxide Compound Name: Magnesium Oxide
5
Naming Ionic Compounds
Example: FeS CATION: Fe2+ is a metallic ion named Iron (II) or Ferrous (since it can hold more than one charge) ANION: O2- is a nonmetallic ion named Oxide Compound Name: Iron (II) Sulfide or Ferrous Sulfide
6
Naming Ionic Compounds
Example: LiH CATION: Li+ is a metallic ion named Lithium ANION: H- is a nonmetallic ion named Hydride Compound Name: Lithium Hydride
7
Naming Ionic Compounds
Example: H2S CATION: H+ is a metallic ion named Hydrogen ANION: S2- is a nonmetallic ion named Sulfide Compound Name: Hydrogen Sulfide
8
Naming Ionic Compounds
Example: NaOH CATION: Na+ is a metallic ion named Sodium ANION: OH- is a polyatomic anion named Hydroxide Compound Name: Sodium Hydroxide
9
Naming Ionic Compounds
Example: CaCO3 CATION: Ca2+ is a metallic ion named Calcium ANION: CO32- is a polyatomic anion named Carbonate Compound Name: Calcium Carbonate
10
Naming Ionic Compounds
Example: NH4OH CATION: NH4+ is a polyatomic cation named Ammonium ANION: SO42- is a polyatomic anion named Sulfate Compound Name: Ammonium Sulfate
