1 The Law of Conservation of Matter
Got Curds?

2 What is matter?

3 IMPORTANT! Safety First!
The hot plates will get very hot! Make sure not to touch them. Be very careful with all ingredients, they will become very hot and spilling them can be dangerous. After the beakers are on the hot plate, make sure not to touch them. Do not eat or drink anything. Follow instructions carefully and do not try anything that is not written on the board. If you need any help, make sure to ask a teacher for assistance. DO NOT TOUCH ANY HOT MATERIALS!

4 Instructions 1. Weigh beaker filled with 150 mL of milk using digital balance. Record this in your science notebooks. Also weigh an empty cup and weigh the cup with vinegar in it. Record the weight of the vinegar and cup and then subtract the weight of the cup from it to get the weight of just the vinegar. 2. Move beaker onto a hot plate to allow it to heat up. After this point, do not touch beaker yourselves, raise your hand and a teacher will assist you. DO NOT BOIL.

5 3. Add vinegar to beaker of milk and stir for several minutes.
Carefully observe. Make sure to write down everything you observe and why you think it is happening in your science notebook. 4. Weigh everything in the beaker again after the experiment is through. Record this measurement again in your notebook. 5. See if the weight is the same as the previous recorded weight. Record your observation.

6 Why is the weight the same even though the milk is in a different form?
Was this a physical or chemical change?

7 Let’s look back at the ice!
What do we observe has happened? Was this a physical or chemical change?

8 Smoothie Time! Should the mass of the ingredients equal the mass of the smoothie? Is this a physical or chemical change?

9 Definition Please write this in your notebooks.
The Law of Conservation of Matter states that matter cannot be created or destroyed.

10 Definition Please write this in your notebooks.
Matter can only be changed between different forms.

11 Definition Please write this in your notebooks.
Matter can be a solid, liquid, or a gas.

12 Let’s see what you’ve learned!
