1 Graphing Linear Equations Using Slope-Intercept Form
Objective Students graph linear equations on a coordinate plane by using the slope-intercept form of a linear equation. Standard 7.0 Students verify that a point lies on a line, given an equation of the line. Students are able to derive linear equations by using the point-slope formula. © Eugene Ruben Ramirez

2 Vocabulary slope y-intercept Slope-intercept Form:
An equation is in slope intercept form if it is solved for y and the constant is the second term on the right. slope y-intercept Recall: y-intercept: The point at which the graph crosses the y-axis. © Eugene Ruben Ramirez

3 Identify Slope and y-intercept
Example 1: Find the slope and y-intercept of each equation. © Eugene Ruben Ramirez

4 Identify Slope and y-intercept
Practice 1: Find the slope and y-intercept of each equation. © Eugene Ruben Ramirez

5 Graphing Using Slope Intercept Form y=mx+b
Is equation in y=mx+b form? Use Inverse Operations to solve for y No Plot y-intercept (0,b) Yes Equation should look like y=mx+b Use to find next point Draw a Line Through the Points © Eugene Ruben Ramirez

6 Example 1: Graph -3 y-intercept= What is the y-intercept?
Is equation in y=mx+b form? What is the slope? How do we write it as a fraction? Plot y-intercept (0,b) Yes x y Use to find next point 1 Draw a Line Through the Points 4

7 Practice 1: Graph 1 y-intercept= What is the y-intercept?
Is equation in y=mx+b form? y-intercept= 1 What is the y-intercept? Plot y-intercept (0,b) Yes What is the slope? x y Use to find next point 3 2 Draw a Line Through the Points

8 Practice 2: Graph -3 y-intercept= What is the y-intercept?
Is equation in y=mx+b form? y-intercept= -3 What is the y-intercept? What is the slope? Plot y-intercept (0,b) Yes The negative is in the front, we need to choose if it goes with the numerator or denominator, but NOT BOTH. x y Use to find next point Draw a Line Through the Points -3 5

9 Practice 3: Graph -4 y-intercept= What is the y-intercept?
Is equation in y=mx+b form? y-intercept= -4 What is the y-intercept? What is the slope? Plot y-intercept (0,b) Yes The negative is in the front, we need to choose if it goes with the numerator or denominator, but NOT BOTH. x y Use to find next point -2 Draw a Line Through the Points 7
