1
Microevolution and Hardy Weinberg equilibrium
What is the role of natural selection in the process of evolution?
2
Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium
Gene pools of nonevolving populations remain constant over generations This principle is the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium
3
Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium
According to this principle, other agents must act on the alleles to change their frequencies To determine these agents we can identify the conditions that must be met to maintain genetic equilibrium (or Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium) No small populations No immigration or emigration
4
Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium
Five conditions to maintain genetic equilibrium…cont. No Mutations No mate selection No natural selection No individual has a greater advantage than any other
