Welcome to round 1. Let the games begin!
Trashket Ball Welcome to round 1. Let the games begin!

What are the rules????? Form teams of two. Pick any partner you like.
Both of you must work the problems. If your answers differ, figure out the correct one before the time limit. Choose only one answer. Keep track of your points – correct answers score points, incorrect answers do nothing. When you have accumulated 5 points you may shoot the ball. You must wager 1-5 points. Making the basket adds the wagered points to 5. Missing loses the wagered points and subtracts from 5. After shooting you must accumulate another 5 points in order to shoot and wager again. You may wager all of your points on the second shot or any other lower amount down to 1. Keep track of your own score. Good luck!!!!!

Problem points An element has a half life of 3 years. If you start with 120 g, how long will it take to decay to 15 g? Answer 9 years

Problem point each Which type of radiation requires a lead shield to stop it? Answer: gamma Which type of radiation releases an electron or a positron? Answer Beta Which type of radiation has the same symbol as a Helium atom? Answer Alpha

Problem points What is the half-life of a g sample of nitrogen-16 that decays to 12.5 grams in 21.6 seconds? Answer : 7.2 s

Problem points Look at the picture below. What is represented? Answer: Nuclear fission

Problem points If we start with 1200 atoms of a radioactive substance, how many atoms will remain after 5 half lives? Answer: 37.5 atoms

Problem points What force holds the nucleus together? What force is responsible for radioactive decay? Answer: strong nuclear force, weak nuclear force

Problem points What are three beneficial uses of radiation? Answer: smoke detectors, used to detect diseases (radioactive tracer), treat cancer, tracers and radioisotopes in agriculture, nuclear power

Problem points each If an alpha particle is released what happens to the mass number and the atomic number? Answer decreases by 4, decreases by 2 If a beta particle is releases what happens to the mass number and the atomic number? Answer stays the same, increases by 1

Problem points ea Uranium-235 undergoes alpha decay. What element is created? Be sure to include both the atomic number and the mass number in the proper format. Answer Th-231 Actinium -227 undergoes beta decay. What element is created? Be sure to include both the atomic number and the mass number. Answer Th - 227

Problem points ea It takes 24 days for 1600 grams to decay to 25 grams. What is the half life/ Answer : 4 days 8000 atoms decay to 250 atoms. How many half lives is this? Answer 5 half lives.

Problem point ea What is the process in which light nuclei combine under extremely high temperatures? Name 2 high risk activities that expose you to radiation. How is radioactive waste typically stored? Answers : fusion, smoking, flying or xrays, buried.
