2. Introduction
Humans breed horses for speed, strength, endurance, size, good nature, hardiness, beauty, and athletic ability.
Today over 300 breeds exist!
These various breeds are also bred to donkeys to produce different types of mules

Horses can be grouped as:

Within these groupings they can further divided by use, for example riding, racing, driving, jumping, or utility.

22. Ponies began to be used underground, often replacing child or female labour, as distances from pit head to coal face became greater. The first known recorded use in Britain was in the Durham coalfield in 1750; however, the use of ponies was never common in the United States, though ponies were used in Appalachian coal fields in the mid 20th century. The last pony mine in the United States closed in At the peak in 1913, there were 70,000 ponies underground in Britain. In later years, mechanical haulage was quickly introduced on the main underground roads replacing the pony hauls and ponies tended to be confined to the shorter runs from coal face to main road (known in North East England as "putting") which were more difficult to mechanise. As of 1984, 55 ponies were still at use with the National Coal Board in Britain

26. Warm or Cold?? Warm blood-
Refers to overall temperament or disposition of light to medium breeds.
Thoroughbreds, quarter horses, and ponies are examples of warm bloods.
Coldblood horses are heavy, solid strong horses with a calm temperament.

28. Sorrel/ Chestnut
A reddish brown horse with reddish, brown or tan mane and tail.  Legs are the same color as the body.  Their legs may also have white markings.

29. Bay
A brown horse with black legs, mane and tail.  Body color run from light brown, reddish to very dark brown, but legs, mane and tails are always black (they may also have white markings).

30. White
White horses are born white.  They have pink skins and usually blue or pink eyes.

31. Pinto/ Paint (color and breed)
White plus large patches of black, brown, chestnut or any other colors.

32. Gray
Born dark with dark skin.  Hair becomes whiter with age until pure white.  A gray may range from iron gray (nearly black) to dapple gray, white gray or flea-bitten gray (with tiny flecks of black or brown).

33. Black
Coal black without brown highlights

34. Dun
Sandy yellow, reddish or brown, usually with darker legs, a dark stripe down the back, and a dark mane and tail.

35. Palomino (color and breed)
Golden body color with white mane and tail.  Can be a light to very dark gold color.

36. Roan
Mixture of white hairs and one other color (chestnut, bay or black).    A chestnut roan is called a strawberry roan or red roan.    A black roan is called a blue roan.
